AI comes to geocaching

Cachly Intelligence is a new set of AI features coming in Cachly 8.2 as part of Cachly Pro. Powered by on-device Apple Intelligence (or an AI provider of your choice), it summarizes cache logs and descriptions, helps you write better logs, and reads summaries aloud in CarPlay — and everything it writes is a draft you review before posting.

What is Cachly Intelligence?

Cachly Intelligence is a set of AI-powered features coming to the Cachly geocaching app for iOS in version 8.2, included with the Cachly Pro subscription. It can summarize a geocache's logs and description in one tap, draft a personalized find log from a few quick notes, and read cache summaries aloud over CarPlay while you drive. It runs on Apple Intelligence — Apple's on-device AI — by default, and it never posts anything for you: Cachly Intelligence drafts, you edit and submit.

Once you enable it in Settings, a sparkle button appears in the places Cachly Intelligence can help: a cache's description, its logs list, and the log message editor. Every feature is driven by a writing prompt you can see and edit, so the AI's output matches your voice.

How does log summarization work?

Cachly Intelligence summarizes a geocache's recent logs in one tap: on a cache's Logs screen, tap the sparkle button in the bottom right and a Cachly Intelligence sheet slides up with a concise summary — how the cache has been doing lately and common tips from finders — so you don't have to read a wall of text before heading out.

Summaries translate, too. Caching abroad? Summarize a cache's German, French, or Japanese logs and the summary comes back in English — or whatever your device language is — so you can tell whether a cache is findable without pasting logs into a translator. The summary is shaped by an editable Log Summary Prompt in Settings, with the cache's logs appended to the end of your prompt.

How does description summarization work?

Cachly Intelligence condenses long geocache descriptions into a quick read: the same sparkle button appears on a cache's description, and one tap turns a lengthy listing — the gist of a long pirate-themed backstory, for example — into a short summary of what actually matters. Like log summaries, description summaries come back in your device language, and they follow an editable Description Summary Prompt so you can tailor what the summary focuses on.

How does the AI log assistant work?

Cachly Intelligence can draft a find log for you, turning a few notes into a friendly, well-written log — it's designed to beat the blank-page problem, not to post on your behalf. In the log message editor, tap the sparkle button and describe what you want to say ("Found it quickly, thank the owner, mention the nice park setting"). Tap Generate and a preview of the drafted log appears: Insert it into your log, or Try Again for a different draft. Nothing is added until you choose Insert.

The assistant follows an editable Log Writing Prompt — the cache's info and your notes are appended to it — so you can teach it to always mention the trail, keep things short, or write in your language.

What are CarPlay voice summaries?

In CarPlay, Cachly Intelligence goes hands-free: it can summarize a cache's logs and description by voice, reading the summary aloud so you get the gist of a cache while driving. Combined with Cachly Pro's full CarPlay support, you can size up the next cache on your route without ever looking at your phone.

Is Cachly Intelligence private?

By default, Cachly Intelligence runs on Apple Intelligence, which processes everything on-device — private and offline-capable, with no cache data sent to a cloud AI service. If you prefer, Cachly also supports Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT (OpenAI), and Google Gemini as providers using your own API key; those cloud providers send your prompt to that service, so choose the option that matches your privacy preference.

You also stay in control of the output: generated text is always a draft, and nothing is posted until you review and submit it. You can edit or discard any suggestion.

What do I need to use Cachly Intelligence?

Cachly Intelligence requires three things: the Cachly 8.2 update, a Cachly Pro subscription, and — for on-device Apple Intelligence — an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

Once you're on 8.2, everything lives at the top of Settings › Cachly Pro: switch on Enable Cachly Intelligence, pick your AI Provider, and optionally edit the three writing prompts. Cachly Intelligence is off until you turn it on.
